McCain's bizarre earmark obsession | FP Passport →
What’s more, McCain seems not to understand that earmarks are just a tiny piece of the fiscal picture. As Barack Obama pointed out during the debate, earmarks represent just $18 billion out of a much larger pie. Compare that to the projected 2009 deficit (not counting the bailout) of roughly $500 billion. Or compare it to the total federal budget of about $3 trillion.

Oh, I miss President Bartlet (and the West Wing)… If only her were an actual elder statesman of our party. BARTLET GET ANGRIER! Call them liars, because that’s what they are. Sarah Palin didn’t say “thanks but no thanks” to the Bridge to Nowhere. She just said “Thanks.” You were raised by a single mother on food stamps — where does a guy with eight houses who was legacied into Annapolis...

McCain's health plan=Fail
David: And his "yeah, just go to your local ER, they'll help you" is stupid as fudge!
Jim: you said it!
David: As someone who is, to speak like Mr. McCain would say over and over and over and over and over and over again, "in the trenches" it doesn't work that easy...ER's don't do wellness check ups we do emergencies, hints the name...
Jim: And, who pays for the $600 ambulance fee when the person is on medical assistance? That'd be you and me
Jim: exactly..... its just another horrible idea... what we need is a fundamental shift in the ideas behind where we are putting healthcare money... prevention is the name of the game
David: And who is screwed by the dude taking an ambulance into the ER because he cut his arm on a piece of glass (true story, Thursday morning)...the guy who isn't breathing worth crap and has to wait an extra 4 minutes for the ambulance who has to drive an extra 5 miles because the ambulance that would have picked him up was picking up a guy with a cut on his arm...that we paid for his ambulance ride because he doesn't have insurance. Oh, don't you worry Jimmy, I didn't give him a cab voucher or a work excuse BOYYYEEEEEEEE!!!
David: Oh, I'm sure Sarah Palin will come in and shake things up though...what a crazy b...
Jim: WORD! that's what we call a bad ass mother-
what?!
Jim: i'm at work, i can't say that!
David: That's what I'm saying cuz!!!

Calm now
Adam Lisagor has a great view of what Obama can’t do: lonelysandwich: There’s a sense that people sympathetic to the cause are starting to get nervous post-RNC, and are calling out for a change of tactic - one in which our side plays dirty, to win at all costs with so much at stake. This fear that we’re letting it slip away, once again, when it matters most and when our chances are best...

More thoughts on the new McCain ad. I have to agree with pretty much all this from TPM The sex ed ad is literally worse than the Willie Horton ad, because at least the Horton story was true. But the bill Obama supported actually did the reverse of what McCain claims - it didn’t mandate more sex ed for anybody, it tried to toughen up existing classes by teaching the risks of STDs. The bill...

This is just disgusting
I’m not going to post the ad here, because if you really want to find it, you can.  But wow… McCain and the Republicans have stooped to probably the lowest low in presidential politics I’ve ever witnessed. from TPM Election Central: There’s a lot to chew on here. But we want to focus on one particularly pernicious aspect of it. The ad shows a dreamy-looking Obama as it...

Why this Monday does not suck
Monday’s suck. Most of the time. This Monday though, has not sucked. Here is why: 1) I got up early enough to make my own coffee in my French press (thank’s Eric and Emily) instead of drinking the filth here at work. 2) When I got to work, there was a blueberry coffee cake type thing that tasted, well, divine. 3) Elizabeth called me and surprised me with another cup of...

Last night, the Republican Convention made it clear they prefer war. They see the world as a dangerous and terrible place. Like the fascist leaders satirized in Starship Troopers, they say they believe it is better to be on the offensive, taking the war to the people who might wish us harm than playing defense. It is better to be an international aggressor - a bulldog with lipstick - than led by...
